3 Day Cleanse 2.0!!

Sorry it as been a while ya'll but Tuesday and I have been going through some personal reflection and situations that have unmotivated us for a while. But today and for the next three days I hope to regain that motivation by starting off with a Three Day Detox Cleanse.

I found it on Pintrest of course! and my mom and I will be going through the process with you all! At the end I will post the shopping list and my review of the Detox before anyone goes any further. But if you want to get a head start click the photo above!! =)

Day 1:absolutely horrible...... Well till dinner. The breakfast smoothie was okay, just frothy due to the celery and the parsley. But lunch....I will not eat today. I am going to be finding another detox salad. I usually can get past the feeling of throwing up and down the stuff but this salad was utterly horrible. I ended up throwing up what I did eat. Trying to blend it didn't help either. There was another option for lunch so I will be trying that. But dinner OMG was so good! Mom and I are going to be making this soup more often. It was so hearty and yummy for being completely free of meat or animal bi products! So yummy will definitely be making it again!

Week One and Counting!!

Sooo..

I was doing so well with NO artifical sugar then someone brang brownie mix to my home...=( Well I gave in... BUT! only had one piece so still within my limits!!! So I am still feeling greeat! I feel so clean and not greasy or sluggish my skin has been breaking out but I believe it is starting to clear finally, hopefully one of the side effects of getting rid of the articial sugars.

One thing I am adding to this challenge is no additives. So no corn starch or things like that, this way my artifical sugars are going away even more. By taking away these articifal goods I am getting rid of the bad "omens" per say in my body! Lets hope it works!!!

Now my weight hasn't really changed during this first week, plus doesnt help mother nature just had to come along on the first week of this journey. So I am gunna keep it going and see how it ends up after the 30 days!!!

My current fridge:
Grapes, Apples, Lettuce, Eggs and Whole grains!

Next weeks additions:
  • Hummus,
  • Nut thins
  • Bannanas
  • Oranges
  • Peanuts (unsalted)
  • and possible Cherries (Tis' the season!)
Any Suggestions for new foods to try in replacement of my sweets!!

And Next week I will be doing the Pionner 5K in Ferndale Washington! My first race this year! I hope I still got it!

Sugar Detox Day One! and Increase Sex-Drive with Diet!

Today it begins...
My NO SUGAR detox...

All I am doing is cutting out all artificial sugars and sweeteners. Because of course you can't get rid of sugars that come naturally in allot of our foods I will not be attempting to get rid of these kinds of sugars. Plus you do need sugar for your daily functioning. Although many people believe that organic sugars can replace refined sugar it is still a good idea to watch your organic sugars as well (Organic Sugar vs White Sugar).

So, today is only the first day but I can already feel a change. Normally I would start my day off with a glass of juice and throughout the day have some candy, maybe a Popsicle or even an iced coffee. But today I have only had water, and egg with ham and toast, and pasta with meatballs (homemade by muah!). So no sugar...and I have a HEADACHE! what is this! I was really not expecting it to have an impact on the first day.
I did not think my body had become that accustomed to sugars in my body! Lets see how the rest of the week goes. I will be going to by some fruit tomorrow for some sweet tastes!

I also read some interesting article today about apples and had to share.

Ever wonder why your sex drive has gotten kinda low all of a sudden? Man I know I have wondered that before!!

This is a simple version of the news article I read but it says that eating better can be an aid in boosting your sex drive!!!

If you are having trouble getting in the "mood" you may need to increase your lean protein intake. Not so much eating more steaks and things but more like nuts or natural peanut butters. If you are having trouble getting aroused you may need to increase your choline levels. Legumes, Eggs and whole grains are good helpers in increasing Legumes. If you are just anxious about sex or can't complete and orgasm maybe you need to increase your GABA. GABA is a brain chemical that helps calm you down. Eating whole grains and high fiber foods can increase your GABA levels and help you maintain every day brain chemicals!

Other "Sex-Boosting" foods include:
Apples
Nuts
Avocados
and
FISH!
Who knew just changing or adding certain foods to your diet can help you increase sex drive!
All of these tips can help you maintain a better life style anyways. By maintaining the chemical balances in your brain you can avoid anxieties, depressions and other mental illness that may inhibit your daily life.

NO MORE SUGAR!

Dieting.....
No one likes to do it...No one wants to do it...
Is there alternatives!? Well not really...

Which honestly is extremely upsetting. Very very upsetting actually. If there was a way you could lose weight and not have stop eating pizza and hamburgers I would do it in an instant! But unfortunately it cant happen.

Now my biggest issue is SUGAR!!! I have the worlds biggest sweet tooth. Some may even say that I am addicted a sugar. I don't like saying that, but I will admit I do struggle with avoiding it.... =(

Most of the men in my family have Diabetes and that shocked me in to fear of getting it myself. As I have seemed to inherit every issue from my mom and my dad I was especially worried about this one.

I love my sugar and so it would be horrible to suffer from a problem relating to my sugar intake!

So starting this weekend!! I am going to try everything to avoid artificial sugars....Like:
Candy,
Coffee,
Soda,
Energy Drinks,
and any other snack or treat that has a high volume of sugar in it.

Like today I bought all fruit juice Popsicles. Yes, that is what I said Popsicles. Now I know I am 22 years old but I absolutely love Popsicles. I am so much a child at heart, thus the sugar addiction!

Also more fruit!!! Fruit FRUIT FRUIT! Seriously!! That is the best way for me to avoid fake sugars and bad sugars!! Especially through smoothies or even frozen! Yes I eat frozen fruits! if you freeze blue berries or raspberries they make really good cool snacks for the summer. (especially when you live in a hot place like I do!)

So here is my goal:
  • NO SUGAR FOR 3 WEEKS!
  • Fresh Fruit is allowed and
  • ONE Cheat per week!!
  • Keep up the working out!
Then! I found a website with a list of healthy sweets!!! I didn't have a clue that some of these where healthy!!
I am not always a chocolate person but when I am...I do dark. I love some of these ideas like the frozen fruits and yogurts, and dark chocolate treats! Take a look you might find something you may enjoy or endulge in!

Here is a few great websites with a list of tips on how to weed out sugar from you diet!! I am using tips from all of these websites in order to keep my mind going!! I will be keeping you all up to date as well here on a journal style blog.

Nike Training Club Review 1!

Okay, My final verdict is
[Disclaimer: This was my only attempt, more to come]

I loved the App, I really did. It did a great job explaining all the work outs and encouraging. As far as results go. I didn't see any. I was able to increase my running amount and speed but I didn't really see a difference anywhere else.

I will be doing another program again this week. But I was very disappointed with my own personal results. I did not lose any wieght and did not see a difference that is why I haven't posted any before and after photos, so sad. But I will be trying the get lean program starting tommorrow!

So therefore this workout program is not yet approved for my body type! Might be better for some of you out there =)

Overall a great App.

NTC...Am I done yet?!

Today I began week 3 of 4 of my Nike training club program. Let me tell ya!... It's been a rough three weeks!! As I mentioned in my previous post I created an intermediate, get toned, with running work out program. This has been some intense training. They start you off running 5 miles and just goes up from there. So if you can't run farther than 3 miles or longer than 45 min I would not recommend adding the running until you get the that point.

This week I just figured out how to modify a work out. Due to my carpal tunnel I struggle with push-ups and froggers etc. So when you review a workout you can "edit" it. I place "edit" in quotations because you really only can edit one or two individual workouts per workout.

Although I am having a rough time with this work out it is definitely worth it. It may not look like you are working hard but man do you sweat! You cannot skip runs or workouts or it will yell at you!
You can also set the app to remind you to do a specific workout on a specific day.

Now... I woke up this morning with a cyst on my wrist making it even harder to do the 45 Min advanced yoga workout. So I have been modifying the times and it makes it way harder! So if you have problems with wrists I wouldn't recommend this program to you.

Overall one of the best Apps I have used to date.

Nike Training Club

On Sunday I, Andrea, will be completing week 2 of the Nike Training Club. A free app that allows you to create and customize a workout plan. I have chosen to do an intermediate, toning work out plan that also implements running. So far I have done some really intense yoga, some crazy HIIT workouts and have ran 5 miles! Next week we're going 6! The Nike Training Club app is fantastic. As you work out you earn your Nike+ fit points, if you follow those like me! (yet still don't quite get what their all about yet).

Nike Training Club features all women but is ideal for men as well! There is no Gender specifics to this app! BELIEVE ME!

The only thing I am struggling with on this app is that some of the customization moves are almost the same. For example: I have carpal tunnel syndrome that causes me to struggle with plank like workouts and anything that puts lots of strain on my wrists. Alot of the workouts have these kinds of work outs that I struggle with. I personally push through them but I am constantly trying to find a good hard modified movement for the workout.
If you don't have a consistent week that doesn't allow you to run 5 miles or to have a 45 min workout every few days you may have difficulty. My training plan changes every week and can range from 15 min yoga videos to 45 min HIIT training. So prepare your week accordingly.

What I love about this program is that you can set alarms and reminders to get you to work out! You also earn other workouts and there is a huge library of great workouts with different time frames!
Definitely a good runner up after Befit 90!

I will keep you all up to date on how its going in a few days!

BeFit90 Day Challenge

\
I just completed the Befit 90 Day challenge!
This challenge was probably one of the best challenges I have done, ever. It consisted FREE YouTube video playlist, one for every day, for 90 days. Each video playlist consisted of 4 videos; a warm up (5 min), 2 workouts (10 min each) and a cool down/stretch (10 min).
Each month consists of about 4 or 5 different workouts and 2 different cool down/stretches. The first month starts you out with great strength and cardio workouts, including MMA and yoga. Month 2 begins more cardio advanced yoga and MMA. The third month gets even crazier.
The third month is all plyos! Which is amazing. That is when all the magic happened.
The Befit90 Challenged really pushed me. Usually I struggle with finding a video that truly pushes me past my wall and wants me to meet a goal. The Befit trainers are awesome encouraging and fun to watch. They are true people and you can actually tell they are working, which I find very entertaining. Sometimes they even fall!! *giggle*.
The Befit90 Program allows you two rest days a week in which a training tip is included on those rest days. Tips include water choices, when to exercise and how to exercise help you stay motivated and keep you going towards your goal.

By making sure I was eating better and keeping on track with this workout I really began to see and feel the results. I'll admit I didn't eat as well as I had hoped. But I began drinking smoothies in the morning with some spinach or kale for added greens in my diet, eating carrots and celery for snacks and adding in more healthy proteins. By doing so I helped my body reach milestones. May not have been major milestones but you gotta celebrate ever little step you take when working towards weight loss and toning.

I totally forgot to measure at the beginning of this workout but I did some pictures and to me a picture is worth a thousand words.

Beginning of challenge: 178 lb                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                End of challenge: 168 lb

I definitely feel a major major difference in my strength and body. You may not be able to tell from my pictures but I know I have changed. There is less muffin top, less gut and no creases. I am finally beginning to love my body more than ever. My pants are even loosening up! I love it.

If you have any questions about Befit please feel free to comment below or follow me on facebook or twitter to ask questions!

Next challenge! Nike Training Club (NTC).

Remember, love your body and stay motivated through the bloating and the groaning! Make every min count!

Update/Late Mothers Day Post

Oh My goodness its been a while.
Surprisingly I have been able to keep up my hard work while maintaining a busy busy schedule that includes, school, work and football. I think I even went on vacation since the last time I posted!

On my vacation I was able to keep my motivation going and working out because of my Amazing Mother. My mom moved to Arizona around the same time I moved to the Tri-Cities. So we've been apart for about a year. In that year my mom has been able to achieve her goal of running 10 miles almost every day. She is hoping to run a half marathon here sometime this summer. Not only is she reaching health goals but she is very close to graduating with her doctorate degree in education. I am so proud of her! She is my true inspiration to keep on going no matter what it is. On our trip we were still able to work out almost every day. Including, climbing this lovely rock in the picture to the right. She taught me some great things about staying motivated and calm. I often find myself worrying if I can't get a work out in or if I can't get my work done. She helped me understand how to control it and to be calm. She also taught me some healthy eating tips, like smoothie ideas and dinner replacements. I will be sharing those with you as we go.
Thanks mom for EVERYTHING you have EVER done for me my WHOLE life. I LOVE YOU!

If you wanna see and read abut my adventures in Arizona please see my photography blog at andreabphoto.blogspot.com

Since I've been gone I have reached level three of my 90 day BeFit challenge! This last month is full of Dynamic growth and Plyo-metric workouts. This Befit challenge is amazing! I would seriously recommend it! I feel great and definitely feel more toned and healthy! The trainer tips on your rest days are truly helpful as well. So if you do it, make sure to watch them! Just in this last month so far I've lost 3 pounds!
Which puts me at 168 lb. I have officially lost 10 pounds since I began working out every day.

Next workout challenge will be the Nike trainer workouts!

Here is a little daily Motivation for you
I love and adore anything Dr. Seuss. I grew up on him, thanks to my beautiful mother. This morning when doing my daily motivational quote I found this one. I love the rhyme but also love the message.

Tiny Tea: Day 1

I'm not going to lie, so far I'm really disappointed! I grabbed two tea bags this morning and put them in my purse so I could make tea when I got to work and again around lunch time. I went to open the first tea bag (they're all wrapped in individual wrappers) and the tea bag split open and the tea went everywhere. One tea bag down, and you only have the specific amount needed for the 14-days.

I decided for today's morning and lunch tea I'd just have to use one bag and it'd be a little weaker. I was much more careful opening the second bag and I STILL almost tore the teabag open. It is ridiculous how small the wrappers are and they should have made them a little larger so they could be opened more easily. I opened it without breaking it, however, there was already a hole in the side of the tea bag! They seem to be very cheaply made. I TAPED the side of the tea bag shut because I can't waste another one. I had no idea if it would survive the boiling water, if the tape would melt, etc but I tried it anyway. And it worked thankfully!

Now for the taste. I'm a tea fan but this tea just isn't the most tasty to say the least. Hopefully tonight when I'm home I can try it with some honey and maybe it'll be a little better tasting! Either way though, it's not about the taste and I'm just hoping for good results with this detox!

Tiny Tea

Hey guys! So today I placed my order with Your Tea and once my purchase arrives I'll be starting my 14-day Tiny Tea "Teatox".

This detox/cleanse was developed by a team of Chinese Medicine practitioners and it's made to provide nourishment to your digestive system while cleansing, replenishes and restores your digestive system to its natural state, helps ease bloating and can aid your body in weight loss. This tea also increases digestive function and your energy levels, and helps clear skin.

Other than the obvious reasons, what attracted me to this particular cleanse is the fact that Tiny Tea is the only herbal cleanse available that doesn't produce a laxative effect. I'm a huge fan of cleanses and have done a few over the past couple years and to be honest, this is always a concern when starting a new cleanse. I've never had a problem with any of the cleanses I've done in the past but I know a lot of people do and are wary about doing a cleanse because they don't want the undesired side effects in the bathroom. Other than the obvious discomfort, there are other reasons why laxatives aren't a good way to go about jump starting weight loss (if that's what you're hoping for by choosing this cleanse). You can read a few reasons why here, but if laxatives are something you're truly considering for weight loss you should do a lot of research on your own. Your overall health is much more important than losing a few quick pounds!

I'm choosing to start with the 14-day package to see if I like it, but there is also a 28-day Tiny Tea cleanse available on Your Tea's website. Once I get my tea in the mail, I'll be drinking it 3 times a day, 30 minutes before or after my meals. The only beverages other than the tea that I'm going to allow myself to drink during the detox are green tea, black coffee and water. Other than that, I'm not going to drastically change my diet (maybe just cut out some more junk food and sugars). My exercise routine is also going to stay the same.

I'll be uploading before, during and after photos, as well as updates on how things are going. So if you're interested, stay tuned!

Also, if any of you are interested in Your Tea's products they have a variety of tea's available and tons of information including FAQs on their website!

Detox Round 2, Diary Style

This week I am starting the same Jillian Michaels Detox.

Unfortunately I do not own a measuring tape so I will not be able to tell if any measurements changed but I do have a scale and the eyes of some great people.

Day One's Drink
This time I am going to keep you guys posted with how I am doing during the week! Beginning with day one and ending with day seven [the day before I go on vacation!]

Bikini body here I come!

Here is the recipe for the Detox that I posted two weeks ago ----> Jillian 7 Day Detox Drink

Here is how I am doing =)

Goals for this week of detoxing and beyond...
  • Today I vowed to eat clean for this whole week.
  • Since its really hard on your body to just change our diet really suddenly I have chosen to have one reward day (a yummy coffee or 1 meal out) and less snacks.
  • I will not talk down about myself. I will constantly compliment my progress not put myself down.
Weight, 172 lb [Pic's Later...=)]
Drink is yummy and bitter as ever. =)

Its officially day two!
  • Had a weird headache for the first part of the day..Not completely sure if its from the clean eating and the drink but I normally don't get headaches.
  • Not much to report on day two but! My metabolism seemed to speed up a little bit today and I wasn't craving snacks nearly as much at work and at home.
  • Lets keep it up

Day four....
  • Oops...Today wasn't a good day. I started off eating well then I used all my cheats in one evening. I ate a burger, some BBQ chips with bean dip and even had half a beer..
  • I felt good till then...
  • Today was an oops day.
  • I weighed in at 171 lb. So not to shabby.

Day Five...Remixxxxxx
  • So today is day five. I am only half way through the day but I have already started eating better. I ate a yummy tuna fish sandwich using light mayo, whole wheat bread and lettuce. With an apple on the side and of course the yummy detox H2O.
  • Here is a really good website I found on chosing the right kind of bread..... "Tips and tricks for choosing the right bread!"
  • Felt guilty about eating badly yesterday so I am making up for it today. Even after yesterdays cheating I still weight 171 lbs. Couple more to go!
  • 3 days left! and 4 till I head onto vacation!

Day Six.....urgggg
  • Today I didn't want to get out of bed. This time around as well as last time the fifth and the sixth days were days were I felt extremely bloated.
  • Although it was my rest day according to my BeFit in 90 Challenge. I was forced to walk a total of 7 miles today. The first 2.5 to the store and back for shampoo and the 3.5 to meet a client to drop her CD of photos off. So I burned a total of 689 Calories anyway.
  • Tomorrow is the last day. My plans for tomorrow include a detox bath to end my day. AND get rid of the last bit of junk that may be lurking around in my system.
Dun Dun Dun DAY SEVEN!
    DIY Green Tea Detox Bath
  • Today was rough. I was tired from my early morning work out but being able to have this drink by my side kept me going and curbed my hunger until it was actually time to eat! And that's rough for me.
  • I ended my day with an amazing green tea detox bath to sweat out what all I had left.
  • Here a link to a great detox bath instructions that I use constantly!! Green Tea Detox Bath, And others.
  • My personal favorite is the lavender oil bath! My favorite especially with a coconut butter body butter after.
  • I ate pretty clean today and tomorrow I will be weighing myself and taking finishing pictures. Cause results don't happen instantly ladies.
  • So far feeling alright. Eating clean is harder than it looks.... Well for me.
The end result:
169 lbs!! 3 pounds down =)
I personally do not see a difference. But here is a picture from day one versus this morning.
I see a difference in the bottom two pictures but not in the top two pictures.
This detox has been amazing. I went through a few rough patches of wanting to cheat and bloating. The detox bath helped a lot for the end of this detox.

If I was to get this detox a rating out of five stars, as of right now it would be a 3.

And it would definitely receive a stamp of approval! BOOM!
Jillian Michaels really hit the nail on the head with this detox. I will definitely use it again. Next time I will hopefully be more of a clean eater and not a cheater!

In my day to day diary above (if you haven't read it already) you will find links to the drink, great bread ideas and other fun stuff!

Please keep following Tuesday and I on our motivational journey!
Stay Beautiful!!!

Jillian Michaels 7 Day Detox drink ROUND 1

So as I mentioned in our last post, I began the 7 day Jillian Michaels Detox drink....
It was....good. I will admit I didn't eat as clean as I could have with one trip for late night Jack in the Crack breakfast with the beau. But I definitely felt a difference although there wasn't a loss of weight, I definitely felt cleaned out. Plus I was PMS'ing that week, which could have contradicted it....(just an excuse to make myself feel good).
[NOTE! this was only round one, so my results may change]

I will be trying it again next week because I will be heading to sunny Arizona in two weeks!! For my spring break mini vacation and I would love to lose some of that bloat weight before I head there looking like a beached whale.

Here's the recipe, along with my first round tips:

60 oz Purified Water
2 Tblsp Lemon Juice (fresh or from the bottle)
1 Tblsp Cranberry Juice (with as little sugar as you can find...Kroger brand was the cheapest and had lowest sugar)
Dandelion Root Tea

-Make tea as instructed on box, cool to room temperature.
-Add all ingredients together.
-Drink all 60 oz a day for 7 days.
-Remember to EAT HEALTHY!

I made this drink the night before, that way I could wake up and jump start my metabolism right away.
60 oz was not very hard to drink, some people may think its a lot but it's not too bad. I now can't go a day without drinking 60 oz or more because of that drink.
Remember to eat clean. I believe this is what made it not work completely for me. Next week I will be eating clean and doing this drink again to see if it makes a difference!

Here's one of the many blogs about it!  One girl even suggests adding licorice root to the mixture as well! Might try that next time! [Note: the picture here shows diet cran-cherry, I recommend not using that but using all natural cranberry juice with as low of sugar as you can find. Cranberry juice is a really good cleansing drink so the natural kind is naturally better ;)]

My boyfriend did it with me. He just called me about ten seconds ago just to tell me he wishes he could drink it every day. It had good flavor, if your used to dandelion tea and really made you feel clean.

Here is my current progress! My goal is to lose tone my arms and legs as well as shrink my stomach and muffin top. =]
Top photo was this weekend, bottom photo was two weeks ago.

Need help? Get it.

I know this looks really long, but I think a few girls out there and maybe parents might take this to heart. It's something that is near and dear to my heart. I want all girls to be heard and so I am addressing the issue. I don't want any debate, these are my opinions and my research.

Young girls need to know and learn how to be strong, they need to learn that beauty is not what people tell them it is, but it is what they believe it is in their hearts. I struggled for a while and I was able to gain the strength on my own.
Remember, there are always people out there that will talk to you! Even me! If any girl out there needs help or guidance feel free to follow me on Facebook (using the follow buttons on the side) and send me a message I am always willing to listen and help.

Adolescent Body Image in Female Athletes
by Andrea Beilner
It was “weigh in” day, the day we all were to weigh in for our personal statistics. All I saw in front of me were the numbers 100 to 125. I heard my name being called, my heart pounded, I was up next. As I stepped onto the little white scale my heart started pounding harder. The red numbers read 150. That was the lowest my weight had ever been. I was taken with excitement. I had lost 30 pounds and four pant sizes to get there. I was proud to have gotten there, but it came with a consequence...I had lost focus on everything else.  I had big dreams and aspirations of being a professional volleyball player. Unfortunately, my weight in high school was not what professional coaches wanted. Even after losing so much weight, I was not "good" enough and I struggled with this idea. I began to think, and be told by my coaches, that I wasn't going to make it anywhere if I didn't lose even more weight. I saw many professionals on television that were tall and thin. Which confirmed what everyone around me and what my mind was telling about not being “good enough”. At 5'4", I knew I didn’t have the height, but I thought maybe I could get by with being short, thin and athletic, and still be successful. Because of this I began altering my behaviors. I leaned towards eating disorders practices, but they didn’t “fit” my life style. But that was not the end. Instead, I became obsessed with insane workout routines that began making me sick.
I became obsessed with working out. I would not, and could not, go a day without more than two or three work outs a day. My obsessive compulsive habits and behaviors were becoming just as unhealthy as binging and purging. I worked out like this for a year straight. These work outs were hardcore. I would start running at six am before heading to school, then again in volleyball class, then again at volleyball practice...and if the season was right, one last time at my club volleyball practice. During the off-season, I would do the same workout in the morning, go to the gym after school and do a run again when I got home. This went on from junior year to senior year, all because I wanted to fit in to that 100 to 125 pound club. If I had continued this, it would have been life threatening.
Eating disorders are extremely dangerous and can create severe long term effects. Many girls fall into this trap because they feel like it is the only way they gain control (Phillips et al., 2008). Girls who develop eating disorders often come from homes with dysfunction, but it is slowly emerging that girls with eating disorders can come from what seems normal backgrounds (Yates, 1991). They are often influenced but socio-cultural effects such as community and media influences (Yates, 1991). Girls who fall into the eating disorder categories are easily influenced and need to be helped.
Adolescent girls are constantly pressured to look like females in the media, and more often specifically females who play professional sports. These many social norms and pressures are what influenced me in my high school years as a volleyball player. Social pressures are always influencing females, even at young ages when girls are not even aware that they are being influenced. Even though I was never diagnosed or considered to have a full blown eating disorder, I was still faced with the many pressures and influences the media had on me. Wanting to be in that special weight classification, I became observant of what my peers did to preserve their weight. I was engulfed by the influences of my peers and the media. As an adult, due to my emergence and exit of obsessive compulsive behaviors, I am now able to identify which aspects of my adolescent years were controlled by my goals of being thin. My peers and the media both influenced my emergence into obsessive compulsive behaviors.

Eating Disorders and Compulsive Exercise
Eating and Feeding. Have you ever looked into a circus fun house distortion mirror? That's what it's like for girls who are diagnosed with eating disorders every time they look in a mirror. Girls with eating disorders do not see their true body shape. What they see is a figment of their imaginations and obsession that they are “fat” (Dolgin, 2011). Eating disorders are developed through the obsession and extreme desire
to be thin (Dolgin, 2011). Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia are the two most common types of eating disorders in adolescent girls (Dolgin, 2011). Both bulimia and anorexia are obsessions with one’s weight and food (Dolgin, 2011). Anorexia is characterized by complete starvation or avoidance of food is practiced (Dolgin, 2011). In my experience, food was something I couldn’t get away from. Bulimia would have been, and was at one point, my eating disorder of choice. One of the ways bulimia is practiced is through the use of laxatives (Dolgin, 2011). In its most recent revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DMS-V), bulimia is categorized as “binge eating followed by inappropriate behaviors” (Feeding and Eating Disorders, 2013). Among these inappropriate behaviors include vomiting and use of laxatives (Feeding and Eating Disorders, 2013). I practiced bulimia by behaving in inappropriate behavior with the use of laxatives. In this form, an individual will take a laxative before binging so that after a binge they have to use the bathroom. Although it wasn’t for long, my stint of bulimia crippled my personality. I became very sullen and short with my family members. That was not the person I wanted to be, so I ended it.

Compulsive exercise. Compulsive exercise is the “religion” I began to practice. It's what I eventually discovered as my new way of becoming the thin and lean individual I had always wanted to be. Compulsive exercise is fairly new in women’s fight to be what they consider their ideal weight, in comparison to eating disorders. Activity and exercise is good for your health, but when it becomes compulsive or obsessive, it may have an extreme negative effect on your body. Compulsive exercise, like anorexia and bulimia, focuses on control (Yates, 1991). The ability to control your body is an idea that girls strive for in the struggle to be thin. Dieting and exercise has become a norm to behavior of women and girls alike (Yates, 1991). Compulsive exercise is the over use of body-based activities such as weight lifting, running and other sports (Yates, 1991).
Compulsive exercise can be fatal. For example, the heart can become over worked and cause a cardiac arrhythmia that can result in a quick death for those who run excessively (Yates, 1991). Compulsive exercisers can also experience withdrawal and loss of control when they are not able to exercise, whether due to an injury or to time constraints (Yates, 1991). In my own situation, at volleyball practice one day I suffered from a concussion. Even though I had a concussion I continued to play because sitting on the side line made my heart pound and my head run wild. I needed to be out there to keep from experiencing withdrawal symptoms. My concussion was not serious, but if it were any worse I could have suffered major problems.  Although compulsive exercise is not classified as a disorder, it is a serious concept that is compared to eating disorders in women (Yates, 1991).  Compulsive exercise, as well as eating disorders, are more commonly found in countries that have high expectations of women as well as pressure on individuals to be perfect (Yates, 1991).
Compulsive exercise has recently been accepted as part of the body-dysmorphia disorder as classified by the DSM-V (Phillips et al., 2010). Body-dysmorphia is an obsessive compulsive disorder that revolves around controlling specific or general parts of an individual’s body (Phillips et al., 2010). An individual with this kind of obsessive compulsive disorder may be fully convinced that their body is abnormal (Highlights of Changes, 2013).  They may believe that they have many flows or defects and may try to control this by inappropriate behaviors (Highlights of Changes, 2013). Compulsive exercise fits into this category because of its obsessive nature to control the way the body looks and feels (Phillips et al., 2010).
Views on Professional Athletes
Female athletes are seen as attention seekers (Krane et al., 2011). They are always surrounded by men and women alike, as well as media companies (Krane et al., 2011). In the media, the appearance of female athletes is emphasized more often than their skill and athletic ability (Krane et al., 2011). This reinforces society’s ideas on what a female body should be, and how masculine is too masculine and vice versa (Krane et al., 2011). Girls learn about how their bodies should and should not look like from pictures in magazines or from television commercials (Krane et al., 2011). In my own experience, there was a commercial on our local news channel featuring one of my volleyball idols. She was advertising a weight loss supplement claiming she had lost weight and gained “attractive” muscle. This commercial is a perfect example of one way girls may become confused between what being athletic is and what being skinny is. My idol was of average height and slender, and she had not lost weight, she was naturally athletic and tremendously skilled at volleyball. This is probably one of the reasons that I wanted to be thinner. Because she was of average height I had the false hope of thinking that being thinner would override being taller in the volleyball world.

In July of 2013, Marion Bartoli was faced
with the thinness culture publicly. Marion Bartoli is
one of France’s top tennis players. In 2013 she won the Wimbledon championship but was faced with a media outburst on her weight (McCann, 2013). The internet blew up, calling her fat, ugly and manly (McCann, 2013). Many people all over the internet
criticized her and said that “she did not deserve to win as she is too ‘ugly’” (McCann, 2013). This story relates to this topic because of its direct link to the media and the idea of female athletes appearance. Marion's great amount of skill in tennis wasn't what people were paying attention to. Rather, the main concern of the media was her body, the idea that she was not thin as well as her athletic build that they dubbed manly. As a matter of fact, Marion is called an amazing role model in her home town by many (McCann, 2013). Marion has defied society’s norms of thinness and has started to give girls a new opportunity to have a positive role model who is happy in her own body.

Analysis
In a study on adolescent female athletes, it was found that girls internalize their ideals of thinness as they grow older (Clark & Tiggemann, 2008). As girls grow and develop around the media they are constantly faced with seeing thin actresses or weight loss program commercials. When this happens at young ages girls are more likely to internalize the ideas of being thin (Clark & Tiggemann, 2008). Internalization leads to the growing distortion of body image and can lead to the obsessive compulsive behaviors of exercise or eating (Clark & Tiggemann, 2008). Because of internalization, when girls observe their favorite athletes on television, they soak that up and begin to believe they should be like them.
When young girls become obsessed with their body-image they may become compulsive. In my own case, I struggled with the obsession of feeling like the girl who won’t succeed. I was constantly faced with the pressure of being thin and even more athletic. I was an athletic girl. I was strong and had stamina but I was built differently than other girls. However, my personal view of my body had become distorted I had troubles believing in how I really was. Seeing the other girls on my team pass up a meal or see my favorite professional volleyball player promote a weight loss program aided in my obsession with being thin.
Adolescent females internalize the ideas of thinness from the media at a young age (Clark & Tiggemann, 2008). Girls see these women in the media gaining attention, and this is desired in high school girls (Krane et al., 2011). Physical attractiveness is important to teenage girls, and it increases their views on their popularity status and social acceptance (Dolgin, 2011). Because I was a female athlete in high school, the volleyball team was my social circle. Because of this I was more worried about achieving social acceptance on the volleyball team by fitting into the physical norms or being thin and muscular.
The story of Marion Bartoli directly identifies what people believe female athletes should look like. But because of her strength and drive to reach her goal of winning a major tennis championship, she was able to shift her focus to the game and not the negative attention she was getting. More girls need to recognize the role models like Marion. This can help girls realize they do not need to be extremely attractive women like Serena Williams or Anna Sharapova who are constantly doing beauty commercials. These women are given much attention because of their beauty and glamor. Marion Bartoli has received little attention since winning the Wimbledon in 2013. Girls need to be able to identify with women who are more like Marion so that they no longer internalize the ideas of thinness. Because of the internalization of the thinness norms, girls are blind to what they really look like and their bodies become distorted in their brains. If girls can have the ability to identify with women more like themselves, they may be able to reach more attainable and healthy goals. Like Marion Bartoli, I am not the thinnest or the tallest girl, but because I loved my sport so much I continued to play. Although I never won any professional championships or became successful in my sport, I still overcame the competition that was going on in my head to be thin. I believe that if I had a role model similar to Marion who knew and acknowledged the norms of being thin, I may not have tried to attain an unattainable goal of being thin.

Conclusions
Constantly faced with the distorted view of my body in the mirror, I struggled every day with making the decision to eat or exercise. I was always faced with seeing skinnier girls beat me in a long distance race when I knew I could be just like them. As well as being confronted with my role model, my favorite volleyball player, become emerged into the world of thinness by doing weight loss commercials. I was faced with the confusion of whether I would ever reach any of my goals as a volleyball player. My venture into the obsessive compulsive world was not a successful one. I tested and rejected eating disorders, then finally tested and accepted compulsive exercise as my religion. Compulsive exercise allowed me to schedule my life accordingly. I was in control, but what I did not know was what the consequences were going to me. Once I started feeling sick after a workout and losing my focus in school I began to realize what the consequences were.
It seems that almost every day young girls are faced with the idea of thinness. Even adolescent female athletes, like myself, are faced with the idea that being feminine means being thin. Female athletes are portrayed as beautiful slender and feminine (Krane et al., 2011). They attract young girls because of the attention they get from the media, the fans and men (Krane et al., 2011).
Unfortunately, young girls begin to internalize this and it can be a contributing factor in the lowered self-body image of adolescent girls. When girls internalize this they become immersed into the world of inappropriate obsessive compulsive behaviors such as anorexia, bulimia and compulsive exercise. These behaviors can be fatal and can cause mental and physical problems for the teens and their families. Hopefully in the future there will be world recognition of this problem and something will be addressed about what the media is presenting to our teenagers. Near the end of my teen years I was able to get rid of the internalized thoughts of role models and peers and listen to my own body. Although I overcame my struggles with weight on my own, there are many girls out there who do not have the willpower and strength to overcome on their own.
